S1, Ep7. One person found this helpful. I am absolutely addicted to Ripper Street! The characters are so layered and interesting and the stories are nail-biting!
There is a masterful blend of humor, sarcasm, tenderness, romance, intrigue, mystery, and violence! The writing and acting are terrific!
I DVR and re-watch the episodes several times! Truly an entertaining and interesting television show - one of the best in my opinion!
I was afraid at first that this would be all about the Ripper and nothing else, but the first episode only really directly deals with that, and the rest of the time, he is a sort of shadow over season 1, but a lot more is going on in the streets of London in terms of crimes that need to be solved.
The chemistry between the three male leads is outstanding as they solve crimes together in each episode. This is one series I am glad I only just discovered, because I think I would have gone crazy having to wait each week for the next installment.
Outstanding performances and a brilliant set and costumes make this first class viewing. We liked this series enough to buy Season 2 --and we'll be buying more seasons as soon as we finish it.
Each episode of the series has a stand-alone mystery that is full of atmosphere, character interaction, suspense, and even a little humor. The characters are all interesting enough, and likable enough, to make us care what happens to them.
Yes, there is some "blood and gore", but nothing TOO excessive. It was great to find a series we liked enough to continue into future seasons!
Even though I thought this serie would be and in depth continuation of Jack The Ripper's murders, it tells the story of the H homicide I pressume squad on London from the Victorian era The first of eight episodes starts indeed with a murder that might lead to think the ripper is back but each of the following episodes developes an individual case which is solved during the 60 min of every feature.
This Squad is leaded by inspector Reid McFadyen , his loyal sargeant Drake Jerome Flynn and the loose canon played by Rothenberg which is an american outlaw of obscure past with amazing forensic skills.
Almost any case start with a body which is fully examined to obtain the proof to pursue the responsibles of such murder thru the streets on the east end of London.
The way this serie is directed, shot and acted, really immerses you in the dirt, poverty and raw conditions of the people of this poor part of London.
The three main characters are portrayed greatly, with their motivations, fears and issues, so you can understand them and learn to love them.
Reid has a sad story on his back, Drake is hard on the outside but a good and loyal man inside, etc. The supporting actresses deliver great and credible roles to each episode helping to tell each story proficiently.
Beatifully photographed this serie is a great portrait of a thrilling era in history with its lights and shadows. My only complaint about this series is that there are only 8 episodes per season and in typical BBC fashion it feels like there is only a season every other year!!
People are still terrified and see him in every corner but life goes on. Not a pretty one and this doesn't act like it is.
A lot of shows from this time pretend that everyone has money or only is about the rich. This show is about the poor, the dirty, the ones no one seems to care about.
But one man Edmund Reid and his radical thinking tries to make a difference. It might take an episode or two to get going but it's well other it.
I end up watching 2 or 3 seasons at a time and binge watch till I'm sad there is no more. See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews.
I love the atmospheric feel of Victorian London in this wonderful TV series. I like the characters, the costumes and the way they talk.
If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan or even a steampunk fan, I believe you might enjoy this period setting TV series. I would highly recommend this.
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. It's not often that I sit down to watch a drama on television, but the whole idea of this series caught my attention when I saw the trailers, and I wasn't disappointed.
This series will throw you into a complete, detailed world of Victorian East End squalor and poverty, its crime, and the men who fight it.
It touches on the new technologies becoming available to the police and the criminals at the time, and on one officer, Inspector Edmund Reid, who understands that with these things even just a few months earlier, Jack the Ripper might very well have been caught sooner rather than not at all.
The Ripper hangs over every aspect of the series, especially when it comes to Reid's personal dark secret which I won't reveal here.
He's not the whole story though, not by a long chalk. There is a sweet understated romance between Sergeant Drake and prostitute "Miss Rose", and mystery surrounding the identities of Captain Jackson and Long Susan.
Give this series a try and you won't be disappointed. It certainly doesn't stint on the gore, but I think it's within the guidelines for the time it was broadcast.
There are 8 more episodes to be broadcast next year, and I'm already looking forward to them. Although I have to admit the fact that I prefer watching American detective series more than British, but Ripper Street is very addictive.
This mini series is not directly about Jack the Ripper but it's mainly about the people who lived on that street one year after the murders.
Sometimes the plot is quite cliche but it is forgivable since Adam Rothenberg is very sexy as Captain Homer Jackson.
Overall it's a good British detective story. I am waiting for the second series to come next year.
Hope they will continually launch new episodes of Ripper Street forever. Fascinating, thrilling, violent victorian cop story.
An excellent period drama. Load more international reviews. Give it a go, you will not be disappointed. I was a little shocked at how good this actually was, it was recommended by a friend and I am so glad now to have watched the show.
A wonderfully enriched and engaging environment of old England, following the aftermath of 'Jack the Ripper. Looking forward to season two - which is under way.
This is one of the best TV Series I have had the pleasure to watch. It is a bit brutal in places; but this is only a true reflection of the "timeset".
I am really looking forward to this. Would recommend to friends. We are very pleased we bought the series and hope that there are many more seasons coming.
The cases, characters, settings, costumes and scripts in the ones we have watched so far have been outstanding as has been the atmosphere and "ambiance" of the White Chapel area it portrays.
With the horror of the unsolved Ripper murders hanging over them like an eerie cloud, the detective, his sergeant and unlikely "medical examiner" are all engaging characters.
We are enjoying it very much! The mysteries are well plotted and the glimpses into life at the times are of interest.
Ripping good entertainment!! Is that I'm currently watching series 1 end to end. I dare say that means I'll be buying series 2 and praying delivery beats my recovery.
And yippee - apparently due to our petition and activity in the US who helped pay for it - something to do with war repayments or something there is going to be a series 3!
Thanks, no doubt they'll claim, to the yanks joining in, like in the World Wars Bought as a gift for someone who was totally pleased with it.
Good price. The story lines are consistently good and the effort to reproduce the dark and poor area of the East End of London is very good.
Although the Brown Bear Public House is in the wrong location, inside it is reproduced accurately. The acting is to a very high standard, and the costumes are good, with the exception to some make up and obviously false facial hair.
I found this series a little difficult to get into at first, but it grew on me. This is probably because the characters grow on one. By the last episode I felt a great deal of sympathy for the main characters.
It's a lavish production too, with a lot of emphasis on period detail. Each episode is also suspenseful - I was on the edge of my seat at times.
A show that works surprisingly well. Made with the American market in mind, great production values, atmospheric sets, and really good acting.
Explores issues that resonate from the nineteenth century to our own time. Looking forward to Series 2, but perhaps not through Amazon since now they are discriminating against us in Spain with postage charges!
I love this series. It gives a real insight into life, crime and poverty in the east end of London in Victorian times.
It is so realistic you can almost smell the stink coming from the people and the streets. The stories are gritty if a little bit grisly and have a little bit of Sherlock Holmes about the forensics.
A very good watch. Great gift and price to for the receiver tat time of ordero catch up on the series to date. You've read the top international reviews.
